Bullmastiffs - Pictures - Historical Notes

The basic purpose of breeding Bullmastiffs was producing a dog that could meet the needs of people involved in guarding estates. Breeders tried to create a strong, powerful, determined, and sturdy dog. The new breed had to be capable of fighting a few armed people, yet easy to control. These qualities were under perfection for a few centuries and were often tested not only in an estate, but also in pit fighting.

The dream of forestry people was a dog with guarding qualities of the Mastiff, strive of the Bulldog, and the scent and endurance of the hound. Such a dog was quite indispensable for them since robbery from estates was regarded one of the worst crimes. It will suffice to say that by killing a deer, a person doomed himself on death. That is why robbers did not give up easily. They tried to escape with all means possible and were sometimes fortunate until the new breed came to the scene.

The Bullmastiff left them no chance for escape. No wonder, fear gained the upper hand and criminals had to think twice about the danger they were going to expose themselves to when attempting to hunt in the forests of the Royalty.

It is evident that though producing the breed took much time and effort, it was worth that. The Bullmastiff spread rapidly and captured attention of dog lovers not only as a guard dog but also as a companion. However, guard work has always been the basic function of Bullmastiffs.
