French Bull Mastiff

The other names of the French Bull Mastiff are the Dogue de Bordeaux and the Bordeaux Bulldog. The exact origin of the breed is unknown. Probably, it traces its roots from the Molossus – the ancient dog of the Greek. According to other theories, it descended from the Spanish dogs from Burgos or from the dogs of Aquitaine. Over the centuries, French Mastiffs were used for guarding the property, fighting with bulls, bears, and other dogs. They also served as war dogs. In the Middle Ages, these dogs became cattle drivers and bodyguards. Many French Mastiffs died when defending the property of their masters during the French Revolution.

The French Bull Mastiff is very popular in France and is gaining popularity all over the world. In the USA, there are around 3,000 dogs of this breed. This breed is not yet recognized by the AKC, but it can be registered by other associations and kennel clubs: FCI, CKC, ANKC, NKC, ORBEA, NZKC, APRI, and ACR. This breed is registered in the Mastiff group.

The appearance of the French Bull Mastiff is very imposing and dignified. These dogs are stocky, compact, and very muscular. A very important feature of the French Mastiff is its head. It’s very massive and broad. Large males have a head circumference of up to 30 inches, which exceeds the wither height of the animal. The jaws of the French Bull Mastiff are massive and undershot. The face and neck are heavily wrinkled. The nose is large and broad, with open nostrils. The ears are soft and hanging down. A black or red facial mask can be distinguished from the coat color. The common coat colors in this breed are all shades of brown from fawn to mahogany. White markings are allowed on the chest and toes only.

The personality of the present-day French Bull Mastiff differs much from its fierce and threatening ancestors. The breeders softened the temperament of the bull baiters and turned them into calm and loyal pets. Some dogs of this breed can be aggressive to other dogs. The French Bull Mastiff retains its protectiveness and makes excellent guard and personal protector.
