Mastiff Breed
The other name of the Mastiff breed is the Old English Mastiff. The breed is ancient. It’s believed to be brought to England by the Phoenicians in the 6th century B.C. These powerful and fearless dogs were used as gladiators to fight bulls, bears and other dogs. Other tasks for the Mastiff were protecting the property, hunting large game, herding sheep, and serving as companions. The Mastiff was among the dogs taken to the New World on the Mayflower. In America, these dogs were used for work. When after the World War II the Mastiff became almost extinct in England, fresh imports of purebred Mastiffs from America helped preserve its unique characteristics.
Nowadays, the Mastiff breed is used for guarding, watchdogging, police and military work, search and rescue work, and weight pulling. These dogs are good at obedience, conformation, and other dog sports. The Mastiff is recognized by all major canine registries and kennel clubs: AKC, CKC, NKC, UKC, FCI, KCGB, ANKC, NZKC, APRI, and ACR. The breed standards in some registries may differ from the official AKC standard, but in all registries the working abilities and strength of these dogs are prized higher than its appearance.
The Mastiff breed is very large and one of the heaviest dog breeds. The height of the dogs starts from 30 inches at the withers; females start from 27 inches at the withers. The weight of the dogs averages 160 pounds; females weigh about 150 pounds. Some males weigh up to 200 pounds. The body of the Mastiff is massive, but compact, without excessive heaviness. The head is heavy and square in proportion. The eyes are small and round; the ears are soft and hanging. The jaws are very heavy; the bite should be scissors or slightly undershot. The coat of the Mastiff is short and lying close to the body. The coat colors range from apricot and golden fawn to brindle, tiger, and silver.
As for the temperament, the Mastiff breed can be described as a gentle giant. These dogs are intelligent, self-confident, calm, steady, loyal, and patient. They make reliable pets for children and excellent guards. The Mastiff breed is known for its ability to hold the intruders without hurting them.
